Former leader of Vetevendosje, Albin Kurti, is likely to be the only candidate running for another mandate as the leader of the biggest opposition party in Kosovo, amidst internal factions of this party which lead to resignation of some of the top activists including MPs.

The deadline for application for the party leader has expired on 10 January at midnight and reportedly no other candidate has decided to challenge Kurti in this internal race. Kurti who is also founder of the Vetevendosje movement and served two mandates as the leader, is expected to be reconfirmed as head of Vetevendosje for a third term after a three-year pause, when the party was headed by Visar Ymeri, who resigned from this position recently.

In December 2017, while Kurti was in detention facing charges of letting-off teargas in Assembly Chamber in 2016, he authorised MPs Albulena Haxhiu and Fitore Pacolli to collect signatures aimed at presenting his candidacy. In addition to Ymeri also other senior activists of this party have offered unrevoked resignation from all functions within the Vetevendosje, including MPs: Aida Derguti, Dardan Sjediu, Faton Topalli, Shqipe Pantina, and Driton Qaushi. They all mentioned internal disagreements which have created factions within the Vetevendosje. Also Vetevendosje member and newly elect mayor of tiny municipality of Kamenica, Qendron Kastrati, has offered his resignation. The Vetevendosje won in three candidates during mayoral elections in October including the capital Pristina and second biggest municipality of Prizren. Internal elections of Vetevendosje are expected to be held in February.
